ARRI Amira, Cameras, SONY F5
Speculation & Sensor growth
Every week some talented visual genius speculates on sensor size and growth. 6K or 8K, comment is always dependent on which camera manufacturer has last given a hint of their development (and need for attention).
Companies like SONY or ARRI have enormous resources and development teams working with the next generation of thoughts and algorithms. When they decide to announce a new sensor or range of exciting new cameras, they are expected to have tested and confirmed the reliability and capability, long before release of any product. However, like the Samsung phones of late, sometimes not every aspect of the operation gets 100% tested.
What puzzles me as an expectant purchaser is how they keep this testing process away from our industry eyes. Who gets to fiddle and poke? Where do they product test at 55 degrees Celcius – or minus 25 degrees?
When ARRI finally release the new ARRI Alexa Mini, will the 6K or 8K sensor have the brain capable of being developed through 7 or 8 years, like the current ALEV III 35mm sensor. Will it be square or anamorphic capable or has S35 become the default benchmark?
Will SONY rotate the pixels of their new camera to revolutionise and challenge thinking the way their F65 camera did?
How large and in what shape will these genius manufacturers build the new release cameras?
With 2017 about to commence, I would love to look over the wall of the testing area and hear the conversations between the technical and the marketing teams.
RED have once again offered and range of cameras which expand the options. Reliability and choice is now part of their brand. Pushing technical boundaries and not failing operationally – (like a poorly tested cellphone) – has meant RED are already ahead in the market.
Maybe at NAB 2017, we will have new announcements, or just more speculation.
It seems to me it is about time for the giants – ( ARRI & SONY) – to release a new generation of sensors and small form factor cameras to satisfy our hunger.
Save us the speculation and release a working model – please.
